There is a critical shortage of providers who are trained in delivering evidence-based therapies for PTSD, insomnia, nightmares, and suicide risk. There is also low patient and provider awareness of these specialized treatment options. To address these gaps, asynchronous web-based methods may be ideal for training providers because they are easily accessible at any time and can be efficiently disseminated across different communities of practice. Additionally, web-based training can use various multimedia formats (e.g., written text, video, and interactive activities) to provide a satisfying, engaging, interactive, and effective learning experience and be regularly updated to the latest research and clinical practice guidelines.
A systematic review of 37 studies of web-based training for behavioral health providers indicated web-based training is comparable to face-to-face workshops in knowledge gains and skill acquisition. Our team has developed and tested web-based provider trainings for evidence based therapies including trauma-focused CBT (TFCBT, tfcbt.org), Cognitive Processing Therapy for PTSD (cpt2.musc.edu), Prolonged Exposure Therapy for PTSD (PEweb), CBT for insomnia (CBTiweb.org), CBT for nightmares (CBTnightmares.org), COPE for co-occurring PTSD and substance use disorders (cope.musc.edu), Brief Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Suicide Prevention (BCBTWeb.org), and Written Exposure Therapy for PTSD (under development). In this symposium, presenters for each training will (1) describe the procedures used to develop each course, (2) summarize the data pertaining to the acceptability, knowledge gain, and behavioral ability to implement training procedures, and reach, and (3) include a demonstration of key features the training. The goals of this Demonstration are to raise awareness about the availability of these trainings and to provide examples for procedures for developing similar trainings for other conditions in an effort to increase client access to evidence-based treatments from providers.
