Abstract Body
Research has suggested that distress and impairment in misophonia can potentially be improved with psychological and behavioural interventions. There is very little information available about how these treatments have been developed, and there is still limited understand of maintenance factors and change mechanisms in misophonia. The Medical Research Council’s (MRC) framework for developing and evaluating complex interventions provides useful guidance to assist with developing or adapting treatments for newly identified conditions. This presentation describes a case study of applying the framework to the development of a misophonia intervention over a five-year period. A timeline will be reported, following key clinical observations, development of theoretical model of potential maintenance mechanisms, the development of suitable measurement tools to assess changes in theorised mechanisms, longitudinal data to test theories, refining of theories, proposed experimental studies and a plan for an experienced-based co-design project to develop an intervention aligned with end-user needs and preferences, based on the current best understanding of the problem. Core elements of the MRC framework will be discussed, including engaging key stakeholders at all stages, identifying uncertainties and economic considerations.
